Die CLL entspricht einer Entartung von Immunzellen des Körpers. Ähnlich wie die normalen Immunzellen unseres gesunden Immunsystems, stehen auch die Krebszellen bei der CLL in enger Beziehung zu anderen Immun- und Gewebszellen unseres Körpers. Nach unseren jüngsten Erkenntnissen kommt diesen Beziehungen große Bedeutung für die Entstehung und den klinischen Verlauf der Erkrankung zu. In Untersuchungen an menschlichem Probenmaterial enstehen jedoch rasch technische Limitationen, welche es nicht erlauben, die volle Komplexität solcher Interaktionen experimentell nachzuvollziehen. Die Gruppe entwickelt daher, in Ergänzung zur Untersuchung menschlicher CLL Proben, Mausmodelle für Lymphome. Diese Modelle dienen dazu, die Erkrankungen in einer Umgebung zu erforschen, in der sich eine adäquate Komplexität vergleichbar mit jener in unserem Körper ausbilden kann.

Das Transplantationsmodell erlaubt die Testung neuer Medikamente, die den Mäusen einen Überlebensvorteil bieten:

+ Milzzellen einer transgenen Maus, die eine der menschlichen CLL sehr ähnliche Erkrankung entwickelt hat, werden entnommen und einer gesunden, nicht transgenen Maus injiziert. In dieser transplantierten Maus entwickelt sich daraufhin sehr rasch eine aggressive Leukämie, die zwar vollständig der CLL des Spendertieres entspricht, aber mit einer Latenzzeit von nur wenigen Monaten sehr viel früher auftritt. Dies ermöglicht es, neue Tumormedikamente zu testen und zu analysieren, ob eine bestimmte Therapie die CLL im lebenden Organismus bekämpfen oder zumindest das Voranschreiten der Erkrankung verzögern kann.

Die zur Forschung eingesetzten Mäuse werden in der Zentralen Tierhaltung (ZTH) der PLUS versorgt.
